Ways to Confuse Your
Co-Workers
(use at your own risk)
  • Put a chair facing a printer, sit there all day and tell people you’re waiting for your document.
  • Arrive at a meeting late, say you’re sorry, but you didn’t have time for lunch, and you’re going to be nibbling during the meeting. During the meeting eat 5 entire raw potatoes.
  • Insist that your e-mail address be “zena_goddess_of_fire@companyname.com” (or “thor_god_of_thunder@companyname.com”)
  • Every time someone asks you to do something, ask them to sign a waiver.
  • Every time someone asks you to do something, ask them if they want fries with that.
  • Send email to yourself engaging yourself in an intelligent debate about the direction of one of your company’s products. Forward the mail to a co-worker and ask her to settle the disagreement.
  • Page yourself over the intercom. (Don’t disguise your voice.)
  • Name all your pens and insist that meetings can’t begin until they’re all present.
  • Come to work in your pajamas.
  • Put a picture of your mother on your business card.
  • Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Always wear them one day after your boss does. (This is especially effective if your boss is a different gender than you are.)
  • Make up nicknames for all your coworkers and refer to them only by these names. “That’s a good point Sparky.” “No I’m sorry I’m going to have to disagree with you there, Chachi.”
  • Suggest that beer be put in the soda machine.
  • Include a piece of your children’s artwork as a cover page for all reports that you write. (If you don’t have children, draw stick figures yourself.)
  • Schedule meetings for 4:14 pm.
  • Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair dancing.
  • Agree to organize the company Christmas party. Hold it at McDonald’s Playland. Charge everyone $15 each.
  • Send email to the rest of the company telling them what you’re doing. For example “If anyone needs me I’ll be in the bathroom.”
  • No matter what anyone asks you, reply “Okay.”
  • Put your garbage can on your desk. Label it “IN.”
  • Grow mold in your coffee cup.
  • Build models of the Seven Wonders of the World using empty soda cans.
  • Put on your headphones on whenever the boss comes into the office. Talk in a loud voice. Remove your headphones when he or she leaves.
  • When in conversation, no matter where you are in the office, mutter, “I think my phone is ringing” and leave. Go get a coffee.
  • Determine how many cups of coffee is “too many.”
  • Develop an unnatural fear of staplers.
  • Compose all your e-mail in rhyming couplets.
  • Install a set of buttons and lights in the arm of your chair. Talk into your daytimer.
  • “Hi-lite” your shoes. Tell people that you haven’t lost your shoes since you did this.
  • Hang mistletoe over your desk.
  • Bring in dishes that you tried to cook but didn’t turn out quite right as special treats for your co-workers.
  • While sitting at your desk, soak your fingers in “Palmolive”.
  • Put up mosquito netting around your cubicle.
  • Decorate your office with pictures of Cindy Brady and Danny Partridge. Try to pass them off as your children.
  • For a relaxing break, get away from it all with a mask and snorkel in the fish tank. If no one notices, take out your snorkel and see how many you can catch in your mouth.
  • Send e-mail messages saying free pizza, free donuts etc… in the lunchroom, when people complain that there was none… Just lean back, pat your stomach, and say, “Oh you’ve got to be faster than that.” See how long it takes until the last person stops believing you. Then start planting pizzas.
  • Put decaf in the coffeemaker for 3 weeks. Once everyone has gotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso.
  • Put those hole reinforcing circles on the center of you eyeglasses. Now go to that executive meeting.
  • Put shaving foam on your bosses telephone earpiece. Dial the number. When he/she answers, say “Sqwish.”

Outrageous Interview Blunders 2011

"What's your company's policy on Monday absences?"
"If I get an offer, how long do I have before I have to take the drug test?"
"If this doesn't work out, can I call you to go out sometime?"
These sound like lines from a movie, but they're not. They are lines from real people ... during real job interviews.
According to a recent CareerBuilder Interview Mistakes survey, hiring managers revealed that they still see certain interview mistakes regularly. The most frequent interview mistakes reported were:
  • Answering a cell phone or texting during the interview (71%)
  • Dressing inappropriately (69%)
  • Appearing disinterested (69%)
  • Appearing arrogant (66%)
  • Speaking negatively about a current or previous employer (63%)
  • Chewing gum (59%)
  • Not providing specific answers (35%)
  • Not asking good questions (32%)

While AOL has not conducted a formal survey on this topic, we have culled stories of some of the most "unfortunate" interview mistakes as told by HR professionals, hiring managers and recruiters. Here are our favorites.

A candidate told me they missed my call because they had another phone interview prior to mine and needed to take a break from the interviewing process.
-- Shilonda Downing, Virtual Work Team

A candidate for an open communications position kept telling the group, "You really get my juices flowing! Like, really, flowing!" We were left with serious concerns about this person being the spokesperson for our agency and mission.
-- Anonymous

A candidate interviewing for a high-level engineering position was invited back for a final interview with his peers. While the engineers were making small talk, the candidate walked down the dangerous path of getting too "pal-sy" with the other engineers. He made several inappropriate comments and cracked a Rogaine joke with one of the balding engineers.
-- Jenny Foss, recruiter, Ladder Recruiting

When we asked the candidate if he had any questions, at first he looked surprised by the question itself. Then he furrowed his brow, thought for a moment and came out with, "Cross dressing isn't a problem is it?"
-- Barry Maher, author of 'Filling the Glass'

A common blunder is when I ask the candidate to give me an example of a time when they made a mistake -- what they learned, what they might do different. I have had several people tell me they have NEVER made a mistake so they had no answer. My thought is, "Well, you just made one now."
-- Kimberly Bishop, N.Y.C-based executive recruiter

A candidate I interviewed was 10 minutes late and did not call. As we were talking, I asked her how her commute was, to give her the graceful entry to explain her lateness. She responded by telling me about her challenging commute, beginning with the argument with her husband about whose turn it was to take the kids to day care that morning. I decided once again to be gracious and asked her if this was a typical morning. She said yes. It was a brief interview after that.
-- Lisa Chenofsky Singer, executive and career management coach, Communications & HR Consulting

During an interview, a candidate said, "Can we wrap this up fairly quickly? I have someplace I have to go."
-- Bruce Campbell, vice president of Marketing, Clare Computer Solutions

A candidate was running late for an interview. When asked by security to show her ID and sign in, she yelled at the security guard and moved briskly to the elevator. Her interview went well, and it was expected that she would be asked to come back for the next round of interviews. After the interview ended, security called the company informing them what had occurred, and she was not asked back for the next rounds.
-- Lavie Margolin, job search advisor

When asked about his hobbies, a candidate replied, "Well, as you can see, I'm a young, virile man and I'm single -- if you ladies know what I'm saying." Then he looked at one of the fair-haired board members and said, "I particularly like blondes."
-- Petri R.J. Darby, president, DarbyDarnit Public Relations

I once had a candidate send his resume to the office crumpled up inside of a shoe. His logic? Just trying to get my foot in the door.
-- Brad Karsh, president, JB Training Solutions & JobBound Outplacement

A PeopleSoft consultant applicant flew to San Francisco to interview with a Fortune 500 company. The company was so impressed with the consultant over the phone, they decided to fast-track her hire and arranged a final meeting with the principal manager in the area. The night before the interview, the recruiter told the applicant to dress to impress. The consultant arrived on time but in five minutes, the interview was over. The reason? The applicant arrived to the interview in a Star Trek uniform. "Dressing for success" is no longer a phrase we use to prep people for interviews!
-- Jack Williams, VP of National Sales and Recruiting, Staffing Technologies

One candidate asked the interviewer when she was due to give birth. The problem was, the interviewer was not pregnant.
-- Deborah Millhouse, president, CEO Inc.

An applicant brought urine to an interview thinking he might have to take a drug test. The urine tested as not human.
-- Michael Hayes, owner, Momentum Specialized Staffing

We were in the final rounds of interviewing for a business development position. The candidate articulated himself gracefully. It was the non-verbal motions however, that caused the problems. As he rocked back and forth in his chair, I suddenly heard a loud cracking noise and noticed the chair breaking. The only thing you could see were this man's shoes with his feet straight up in the air. The next thing we heard was a loud flatus noise coming from the candidate. He got up, looked at all of us and said, "Now that just knocked the wind right out of me," and continued making his presentation like nothing happened. The hiring manager stood up, stopped the interview and said, "You clearly demonstrated that you have the ability to think on your feet as well as off your feet, and when you get completely sidetracked with what seemed like an embarrassing moment, you continued unshaken. When can you join our company?"
-- Kevin O'Malley, chief HR strategist, Sterling Staffing, Inc.

During an interview, an entry-level candidate said, "I don't want to be bored at this internship." It's important for students to know their role and show employers respect.
-- Lauren Berger, CEO, Intern Queen Inc.

The biggest mistake I had a candidate make in an interview was to share with the hiring manager that he had a side photography business he did in his personal time, after hours and on the weekend. This candidate went from being "the guy for the job" to cut loose within five minutes. Everyone understands that what you do in your personal time should be your own business. However, the VP wanted to hire someone that would be fully dedicated to putting in whatever hours it took to be successful in the role."
-- Jordan Rayboy, IT executive recruiter

I interviewed a candidate for my growing business who was exceptional in every aspect. I was sure to hire her. I asked her about her future plans. She said, "I am here to learn your business and then in two years I will become your competitor and run the same business." Needless to say, I didn't hire her.

Six Job Hunter Horror Stories

Job hunting can be a scary endeavour. The following true stories will raise the hair on the neck of even the bravest job seekers. You can learn from their hard-earned lessons. (Names have been changed to protect the traumatised.)

Horror Story No. 1: The Invisible Man
"I'd been looking for a different job for several months and after much searching I was finally offered a new position," Julie N., an administrative assistant, says. "Of course I accepted, but days after I'd given notice to my current employer, my new employer called and told me they had re-evaluated their financial situation. They were rescinding their offer!

"Panicked, I tucked my tail between my legs and went looking for my current boss to tell her I wouldn’t be resigning after all. I made every effort, but she was tied up in meetings all day. The following morning, during a staff meeting she made reference to my upcoming departure. I was stuck. I had no choice but to reveal my predicament and ask for my old job back – in front of the entire office staff. She gave me two months to find a new job."

Lesson: Always confirm a new job offer before you resign from the old one.

Horror Story No. 2: A Nightmare on Elm Street
"I once called regarding an ad for a 'marketing rep.' The interview consisted of walking door to door (in coat and tie) with another employee as we tried to sell car servicing vouchers," Phil G., an account executive, remembers. "He would try to make a sale, and then ask me to try one as part of the interviewing process. In between, my interviewer would ask me questions about my career goals and dreams.

We stopped for lunch at a McDonald’s and he had to borrow money from me so he could eat! The final stage of the interview included a closed-door motivation session with all of the current marketing reps. They sang songs, clapped, and chanted the company motto (which I don't recall). I had to think fast. It was raining that day. I told my coach/interviewer that I had left my car window open. I got up, ran out and never looked back."

Lesson: When scheduling an interview, inquire about the role and location.

Horror Story No. 3: Friday the 13th
"One of my first jobs as a supervisor was to interview candidates for an administrative assistant position," John S. recalls. "We scheduled a full day of initial interviews. Following a very wet and rainy night, some areas of our office roof were leaking and maintenance had a couple of buckets in the hallway. Not a great first impression, but well, it was a quaint old office building.

"Each applicant had to complete a battery of written tests. As one candidate dutifully sat at a desk outside my office, I heard a 'crack,' a 'swoosh' and then a huge splash. The ceiling tile just above the candidate had collapsed under the weight of the rain water and drenched her. Wet but unharmed, the experience clearly dampened her spirits and her expensive interview suit. She immediately informed me that she was no longer interested in the job."

Lesson: Prepare for a rainy day and bring an umbrella.

Horror Story No. 4: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
"Looking to escape the policies, procedures and politics of a big company, I sent my C.V. to a small, privately-owned manufacturing company that was looking for a top executive. I received an invitation from the owner of the company to come to an interview. His office had a fireplace, very comfortable-looking sofas and looked more like a living-room than an office. The interview went well and I was excited about the flexibility of the job, the tremendous earning potential and the opportunity to travel around the world to visit clients," Patrick L., a top financial executive says.

"That is, until the owner asked if my wife would be willing to travel with me. I explained that wasn’t possible as she too was a professional and had her own full-time career. He then asked if I would be comfortable travelling with an escort as many of their international clients expected to be entertained and treated to lavish dinners with their significant others! Having invested an equal number of years in both my marriage and my career, I decided I wasn’t willing to put either at risk, even if this sounded like my dream job."

Lesson: Don’t lose sight of what really matters.

Horror Story No. 5: House of Wax
"I drove 300 miles each way at my own expense to interview for a position at a particular company," Matthew H., a marketing manager, says. "When I sat down for the interview, the interviewer (an assistant manager) only asked me ONE question, "Can you tell me about yourself?" After I gave a brief 90 second introduction, she indicated that was all the questions she had and asked if I had any questions for her."

"Somewhat baffled, I proceeded to INTERVIEW HER -- on her background and skills, her position, her department, the company, company culture, etc. With such a complacent and unenergetic attitude to recruiting qualified employees, I left that interview and the company unimpressed."

Lesson: Thoroughly research a company and prepare a list of questions before heading out to an interview.

Horror Story No. 6: Psycho
"I had been looking for an opportunity to relocate to the North-East from London and move into sales management, when I received a call from a company in Liverpool about a position as a regional sales manager. They offered to fly me in for an interview with two of their senior sales managers. I had heard industry rumours that the company wasn’t doing too well and that their technology wasn’t exactly keeping pace with the competition. But I was impressed that they were going to pay for me to fly in from London, and was flattered that they were interested in me," Tricia C., a national sales manager, recalls.

"When I arrived, I discovered that the address they provided was not a company office, but instead it was a low-budget B&B close to John Lennon airport. The room number they gave me was for a guest room, not a meeting room. I was greeted by two old seemingly unwashed guys in badly-fitting suits who had spread a number of company brochures out on the bed. The rumours were obviously true!"

Lesson: Trust your instincts and first impressions.

Great Places to Work: Interview Horror Stories
The funniest job interview mishaps

We asked area recruiters and employees: What's the funniest job-interview mistake you've seen or heard about?
Common themes emerged. Some job candidates answer cell phones during interviews. A surprising number ask the interviewer out on a date. A few too many fall asleep midinterview. Several are so nervous or unprepared that they forget the company name, the position they are applying for, or the interviewer's name.
Some other tales:

Wardrobe Malfunctions

"I was interviewing in the spring and had horrible allergies. I was sitting in front of my prospective employer, and I started to sneeze. The button from my skirt shot across the room. The employer never missed a beat. When the interview was over he walked me to the door, picked up my button, and shook my hand goodbye."
--Deb McDonald, Systems Planning and Analysis

"A guy who forgot dark socks to wear with his suit colored in his ankles with a black felt-tip marker."
--Scott Langerman, Comcast SportsNet

"The candidate was sitting with her legs crossed and swinging one leg. Her shoe flew off and underneath the interviewer's desk. She never said a word about it. The interviewer knew what happened because the shoe hit his foot, but he never said a word. She got her shoe back at the end of the interview."

Books cascaded down, with the crashing bookshelf narrowly missing his head."

We discussed the possible shortcomings to his decision, and because he was so honest, he ended up getting the job."

Funniest Job Horror Stories ToyTop 10 Funniest Job Horror Stories
Everyone has work or job search horror stories to tell. Here are 10 of the funniest job horror stories from around the web.

10. Concerned Employer

From Workrant.com:
“Firing a married couple who had just bought a house and were expecting their first child. The husband was simply fired because they (upper management) figured he’d be mad that his wife was fired.”

9. Honesty is the Best Policy

From The Real World:
“I instantly realize, of course, that there had indeed been a dollar on that table and I tell them that, and that I know that dollar is somewhere deep in the bucket, since that was the first table I had bussed and the bucket was now full, and since I don’t empty the buckets, I obviously wasn’t stealing… They say if it isn’t in that bucket I’m fired.”

8. Job Search Computer Virus

From ResumeEdge.com:
“I sent a digital resume and cover letter via email to apply for a position as a technical writer. Within a few hours, a message from the director in charge of hiring came via email. Full of anticipation, I opened the email to find a terse message: ‘your resume is infected with a virus and has been quarantined.’ A person cannot recover from an infected resume. I did not pursue the position further.”

7. Interview Crashes

From Careerbuilder.co.uk:
“One of my first jobs as a supervisor was to interview candidates for an administrative assistant,” Leigh S. recalls. “We scheduled a full day of screenings. Following a very wet and rainy night, some areas of our office roof were leaking and maintenance had a couple of buckets in the hallway. Not a great first impression, but hey, it was a quaint old office building. Each applicant had to complete a battery of written tests.
As one candidate dutifully sat at a desk outside my office, I heard a “crack,” a “swoosh” and then a huge splash. The ceiling tile just above the candidate had collapsed under the weight of the rain water and drenched her. Wet but unharmed, the experience clearly dampened her spirits and her prized interview suit. She immediately informed me that she was no longer interested in the job.”

6. Owning up in Public

Also from Careerbuilder.co.uk:
“I’d been looking for a different job for several months and after much searching I was finally offered a new position,” Julie N., an administrative assistant, says. “Of course I accepted, but days after I’d given notice to my current employer, my new employer called and told me they had re-evaluated their financial situation. They were rescinding their offer!
“Panicked, I tucked my tail between my legs and went looking for my current boss to tell her I wouldn’t be quitting after all. I made every effort, but she was tied up in meetings all day. The following morning, during a staff meeting she made reference to my upcoming departure. I was stuck. I had no choice but to reveal my predicament and ask for my old job back — in front of the entire office staff. She gave me two months to find a new job.”

5. My Way or the Highway

From WorseThanFailure.com:
“Oh I’m sorry,” the Chief Development Manager barked, callously, “were you guys trying to have a meeting in here? Because, if I was interrupting you two, I can stop. And I’m sure all the fifty-three other developers sitting here have nothing better to do than wait for your little meeting to end…”
“…A week later, the Chief Development Manager approached David and each of the other developers from the Build Process meeting and apologized to them.
I’m kidding. He fired them on the spot.”

4. Creative Job Seeking

From Washingtonian.com:
“A guy who forgot dark socks to wear with his suit colored in his ankles with a black felt-tip marker.”

3. Unfaithful Family

From Helium.com:
“Yes,” I said at last, wanting to be honest, and still not overly concerned, “Anna Wilson’s my sister… why?”
Complete, utter, uncomfortable silence, before my boss pulled the car into a parking space. We were back at work.
“She was dating my husband. My married name was Shrayger.”

2. It’s All an Act

From Tales of Corporate Oppression:
“I once got talking to a guy whose job it was to go into a company, sit alongside the Systems Administrator for two weeks, and write a professional audit on his processes and practices.
Naturally the sys admin would be on his best behavior, showing off all the clever things he did to keep the company’s computer network ticking over.
At the end of the two weeks, the sys admin would be fired. There was never any audit: this was just the method the company used to replace their IT people without disruption, making sure the new guy was trained up and the old guy didn’t cause any damage before he left.”

1. Too Good to be True

From Captain Internet, Ha’aretz (Hebrew):
Aleksey Vayner applied for a banking position at UBS AG with a video job resume entitled Impossible is Nothing. After becoming the laughingstock of Wall Street, impossible became something for him.

Bonus Horror Stories

More from the really funny Washingtonian article:
“The candidate said that by crossing the Maryland state line he was in violation of his probation but felt the interview was worth risking possible jail time.”
“Someone was asked what person they would most like to meet, living or dead, and their response was ‘the living one.’”
“When a candidate was asked about his greatest accomplishment, he replied that it was writing a short novel. When the interviewer said, ‘No, I mean something you did while at work,’ the candidate replied, ‘But I did write it while at work!’

Office Humor: Funny Things To Try At Work

Is work getting you down? Tired of same ‘ol stuff — day in and day out?
Here are some FUN ideas to lighten things up a bit around the office.
Some are flat out crazy. But others might be worth a try …so long as the people in your office have a good sense of humor!
This post could be subtitled: How to keep a healthy level of insanity at work.

1-POINT OFFICE DARES:
1. Walk sideways to the photocopier.
2. Ignore the first five people who say ‘good morning’ to you.
3. Phone someone in the office you barely know, leave your name and say, “Just called to say I can’t talk right now. Bye.”
4. Shout random numbers while someone is counting.
5. To signal the end of a conversation, clamp your hands over your ears and grimace. (Or, give the casino dealer’s hand signal for “I’m out.”)
6. Leave your zipper open for one hour. If anyone points it out, say, “Sorry, I really prefer it this way.”
7. Make a face like somebody beside you farted.
8. While riding in an elevator, gasp dramatically every time the doors open.
9. While sitting at your desk, soak your fingers in Palmolive.
10. No matter what anyone asks you, reply, “Okay.”

 3-POINT OFFICE DARES:
1. Say to your boss, “I like your style” and shoot him with double-barreled fingers.
2. Babble incoherently at a fellow employee then ask, “Did you get all that, I don’t want to have to repeat it.”
3. Page yourself over the intercom (do not disguise your voice).
4. Kneel in front of the water cooler and drink directly from the nozzle (there must be a ‘non-player’ within sight).
5. Grow mold in your coffee cup.
6. As often as possible, skip rather than walk.
7. Don’t use any punctuation. Or, use, too…much; punctuation!
8. Put your waste basket on your desk and label it “IN”.
9. For an hour, refer to everyone you speak to as “Bob.”
10. When in conversation, no matter where you are in the office, mutter, “I think my phone is ringing” and leave.
11. Hang a 2-foot long piece of toilet paper from the back of your pants and act genuinely surprised when someone points it out.
12. At sensitive moments, blow your nose raucously. Apologize for your sinus condition.
13. Wear a disposable paper face mask. Tell the group: “Hey, you don’t want to catch what I’ve got!”
14. Bring a noisy electric pencil sharpener to the meeting. Sharpen your pencil every few minutes.
15. Every time someone asks you to do something, ask them if they want fries with that.

5-POINT OFFICE DARES:
1. Every time someone asks you to do something, ask them to sign a waiver.
2. Walk into a very busy person’s office and while they watch you with growing irritation, turn the light switch on/off 5 times.
3. Take donuts to the morning meeting, and poke your finger into each one “testing for freshness”.
4. Announce to everyone in a meeting that you “really have to go do a number two.”
5. After every sentence, say ‘Mon’ in a really bad Jamaican accent. As in “The report’s on your desk, Mon.” Keep this up for 1 hour.
6. At the end of a meeting, suggest that, for once, it would be nice to conclude with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner (5 extra points if you actually launch into it yourself).
7. While an office mate is out, move their chair into the elevator.
8. Put those hole-reinforcing circles on the center of your eyeglasses.
9. In a colleague’s Day Planner, write in the 10am slot: “See how I look in tights.” (5 Extra points if it is a male, 5 more if he is your boss)
10. Carry your keyboard over to your colleague and ask, “You wanna trade?”
11. Repeat the following conversation 10 times to the same person: “Do you hear that?” “What?” “Never mind, it’s gone now.”
12. Come to work in Army fatigues and when asked why, say, “I can’t talk about it.”
13. Posing as a maitre d’, call a colleague and tell him he’s won a lunch for four at a local restaurant. Let him go.
14. Speak with an accent (French, German, Porky Pig, etc) during a very important conference call.
15. During the course of a meeting, slowly edge your chair towards the door.
16. Arrange toy figures on the table to represent each meeting attendee, move them according to the movements of their real-life counterparts.
17. Have your co-workers address you by your wrestling name, “Rock Hard.”
18. Suggest that beer be put in the soda machine.
19. Send e-mail to the rest of the company telling them what you’re doing. For example, “If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the bathroom.”
20. Rubberneck at the notes of the person next to you. Copy them word for word. Subvocalize as you do. Tell them that they “understand these things better than you do.”
